Lavender Ultra Blue and 5A: what the quality labels mean

Ultra Blue and 5A are quality descriptions used in trade for dried lavender. They should not be read as an independently verified certificate. In our research, we could not substantiate a single grading standard with defined thresholds shared by all suppliers. Compare the actual product information, not just the grade name.

What does Ultra Blue mean?

The name highlights the blue-violet appearance of dried lavender buds. Colour is an attractive feature for sachets and crafts, but does not establish botanical species, essential oil content or a guaranteed fragrance lifetime.

What does 5A mean?

Some sellers pair 5A with Ultra Blue to describe a selected grade. Without the supplier's grading specification, there is no reliable way to translate this into a fixed percentage of flowers, a measured oil content or a universal ranking above other products.

Ultra Blue is not the same as the cultivar SuperBlue

Proven Winners lists ‘SuperBlue’ as a cultivar of Lavandula angustifolia. A trade description saying Ultra Blue or 5A alone does not establish that a product contains this cultivar.

How to compare dried lavender

  • Contents: check the stated weight and number of sachets.
  • Botanical identification: look for a documented species and cultivar, if supplied.
  • Selection: compare visible buds and the amount of stem material.
  • Fragrance: colour alone cannot establish scent strength. Species, variety and storage matter.
  • Certification: organic status needs its own evidence; a 5A label is not organic certification.

Lavoire lavender sachets

Our Lavoire pack contains 20 breathable organza sachets with 5 g of dried lavender each: 100 g in total. We source lavender described as Ultra Blue. Place the sachets in wardrobes, drawers, linen storage or travel bags. Gently knead to refresh the aroma and keep unused sachets cool and dry. These sachets are for home fragrance, not consumption.

Frequently asked questions

Does 5A mean five times stronger?

No such meaning was established by our research. A fragrance-strength claim would need a defined test and comparable measurements.

Does Ultra Blue mean organic?

No. Colour or a commercial grade is separate from organic certification.

How long does a sachet smell?

We do not promise a fixed duration. Storage, temperature, airflow and handling affect the aroma.
